Takeley Cricket Club Saturday Second XI v Thorley II on Sat 11 Jun 2011 at 1:30 pm
Takeley Cricket Club Won 9 wickets in the 19th over
Match report
A much needed win for the 2nd XI, set up by miserly opening spells from the opening attack...and a fortunate win of the toss, so that we could bowl first on wicket that "Did a bit".
Early wickets from Dazza and Si-Lo reduced Thorley to 4-3 of 6 overs and pin-point accuracy kept the hold on any runs. Si-Lo's 2-9 of 10 overs led the way and Dazza's 3-21 was a fine return for some unplayable deliveries (not just the wides!). Catches were held behind and infront of the wicket and 2 sharp run outs completed a very competent fielding performance.
The Skipper and Dave Gunn started Takeley's response confidently with the runs ticking over well, until the Skipper's trade mark front foot uppish square-cut for 4 tweaked something nasty in his back, from which a major League "Incident" ensued. Instructions to the pavillion were passed for 3 brave souls to venture forth into the depths of the Skipper's kit bag to retrieve the relevant tube of pain relieving "Lubricant". Said substance, having now found its way to the middle now needed application. Any takers? So a "Fine" now earned by Umpire Ash for applying the "Gel" to pain stricken back, not realising that under his whites, the Skipper was wearing "Budgie Smugglers" - and surely both club and HECL disciplinary procedures will now be tested to the full.
Having negotiated with the Oppo's skipper to retire hurt - but be-able to return after a cup of tea and when the opening bowlers had finished their spells - the Skipper sloped off the pitch to seek a nurse amongst the spectators to ease his pain. Alas, only a mid-wife was on hand - although the Skipper did learn he was nearly fully dilated.
So young Pickermole was an able replacement and when Dave succumbed following a a doughty 29, Rob H joined him at the crease with his oversized weapon. Rob's final score was 46 not out. Very apt - as he only hit 4s and 6s (4x6 and 7x4). JP finished on 23 not out, ending the game after 19.1 overs with a fine lofted drive for 4 over mid wicket. "M-o-o-o-ooo"!
A good and morale boosting win for the 2s and, given that all player from both sides seemed to know each other, a game played in the most enjoyable of spirits. Got a feeling it will be a closer result in the return match, though.
