Takeley Cricket Club Saturday Second XI v Matching Green II on Sat 04 May 2013 at 1:30pm
Takeley Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
Great start for the newly promoted 2s with a good win over Matching Green. After inserting the opposition Dazza and Lloydo accounted (Geddit????!!!) for the early overs with very respectable opening spells and as the overs progressed both were getting the ball quite close to the stumps on more than one occasion - the benefit of their sabbaticals last season already paying off. A diving catch by Dave H accounted (no pun this time) for the excessively experienced Matchin opener and set the standard for a further 8 catches to be snaffled - including 3 from Peggy. A very good spell from 14 year old Tom Nash saw him pick up 2 wickets and would have had a wicket with his first ball if a catch had been held. Still, no grudges borne in this team and we should not look any deeper into a chance spilled by young "Nashy" off of Jarvo's bowling later. Jarvo, himself, bowled a tidy 5 over spell later in the innings and is the proud owner of the Takeley 2nd XI "Straight Ball" which just mangaged to clip off stump. In an attempt for an early tea, the hungry Skipper made the season's most controversial decision, turning to the already over used Ash Harringtion (a single over 3 years ago) to mop up the tail and with tea firmly fixed in JP's mind he swallowed a skyer to give Ash his only wicket for the club - now, and forever.
A sumptious tea was enjoyed by all those who made it to the tea table before JP and a relaxing 30 minutes was enjoyed looking at page 1 of a teletext page with 5 out of date championship scores. Ah - the cricket season has begun.
As a run rate of less than 3 an over was required, Takeley had just the men to open who might get us close to this and, with over 100 years of experience and fitness to fall back on, an opening stand of 57 was struck up by the Skipper and "Gunn the Elder" - before a Matching bowler cunningly used the aforementioned straight ball before Jarvo had a chance to apply for its patent. Dave declined to hit it and the death rattle ensued. This brought the in form JP to the crease but without his own Gray-Nicholls bat (other brands are available - adidas usually) and had to use Liam Brown's old Warsop - with dire consequences. A light-handed nudge duly flew (well, lobbed really)out of the middle and landed in the bowler's hands. A first-baller and all down to a low grade bat manufacturer. To make amends, next out was Warsop's latest sponsored batsman, young Ash, clad top to tail in all mannner of Warsop aparell and his new Warsop bat, the Nimbus 2000 (or something). Along with the Warsop wielding Skipper, a stand of 80 was then put on to bring home the points and a very good win for the newly promoted 2s.
