Match report
The First XI made a successful start to their campaign with an away win at Braughing.
Having been promoted from Division 3 in 2016, the hosts were an unknown quantity and, after losing the toss, TCC were tasked with setting a competitive total.
Thake and L.Brown opened, with several cobwebs to be shaken off. After adapting to the slow speed of the pitch, the opening pair started ticking along nicely, scoring regular boundaries. Spin was introduced very early and Thakey was keen to show that his winter was indeed spent at dance performances and not practising in the sub-continent, surviving a number of near misses. Brown soon reached his half century but played one shot too many, skying a half tracker straight to mid-on to end on 64. This bought Sean Lemon to the crease who, despite timing it well, was unable to find the gaps.
Thake was next out however, attempting to pull the ball before the bowler had even released it – a well made 43. Tom Brown walked out next and soon began to play his usual range of monster shots. Tom was well caught for 30 and Sean (14 runs) chipped up a leading edge which brought on fears of a classic Takeley collapse.
Jack Coleman made 5 at 5 to mark a brief league debut for the club, leading to cousin Matt/Jeff (also making his debut) nervously parading the boundary in his disgracefully old kit. Matt was due in at 8 but would not be needed as Paaaaaaat Roach and Ozzy steadied the ship before taking on the bowling at the death in what was ultimately a match winning century+ 6th wicket partnership. Pat ended on 50*, smashing a 6 off the final ball, and Oz made an excellent 41*. Takeley went into tea having put up 255-5 from our 45 overs.
Fitten’s first contribution of the season came during tea as he set about demolishing the majority of the homemade brownies on offer; he later requested to field from fine leg to fine leg in order to help run some of them off.
TB and Paaaaaaaaaaat took the new ball, bowling the first 20 overs straight through. It became clear early on that the wicket of Braughing’s opener, Fulk, would decide the game – Tom and Pat were unlucky to only get the one wicket between them (TB with 0-26 and Pat 1-41).
Wayzer was next into the attack, showing a huge amount of courage to overcome a leg boo-boo he ‘apparently’ picked up in the field (cough…bullsh*t). He soldiered on and bowled a classic Timmy Way half tracker with only his second ball which the batsman slapped straight to L.Brown at Cover – a very undeserved wicket but a much needed breakthrough. Their main man was still in, however, and didn’t look likely to cave to Wayzer’s spinners.
Tom Nash was brought into the attack at the other end, making his first XI debut after impressing in pre-season nets, and bowled with great pace and bounce. Braughing were struggling to get him away and in his 7th over he trapped Fulk LBW (we actually appealed so it must have been plumb). The big wicket had made a very solid 73 but we were now in the driving seat. Nashy’s 1-36 was a crucial spell and we’ll be seeing Tom in the 1’s many more times this year.
Fitten’s stomach had become comfortable again just in time for everyone’s first helping of mystery spin for 2017. Some of the usual double bouncers, full bungers and occasional good ball were all on display which masked the wickets that Timmy Way was slowly picking up; Wayzer ending with figures of 4-31 off of his 10 overs.
In the end, Braughing simply nudged the ball about to ensure full batting points and ended on 201-7. A good overall fielding performance and 54 run win for TCC. A mention must go to Ozzy, who was an animal in the field, and Jeff Coleman who did a great job in taking Ozzy’s place behind the stumps.
The First XI can now look forward to their first home game of the season when they welcome Birchanger.
