Farnham v Takeley Cricket Club Saturday First XI on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 1.30pm
Takeley Cricket Club Lost by 2 runs

Match report On a clear warm day, but with a blustery wind, Takeley travelled to near neighbours and long-time rivals Farnham. In a great game, that was a great advert for local village cricket Takeley were edged out by 2 runs to suffer their first defeat of the season.

Farnham won the toss and elected to bat against a much changed Takeley line up, featuring 3 x Miles’ and the return of veteran fine leg specialist, and Director of Cricket Conno.

Young guns Teebs and Paaaaaaaat opened the bowling with both bowling tidy spells. Pattttttttt gamely running up the hill into the wind and Teebs using his pace down the slope searching for a breakthrough against the Farnham openers who were accumulating well with a mixture of drives and drives…

With Paaaaatttttttt suffering with sunburn, Wayzer took the uphill slot, in all likelihood not for the first or last time in his career, with Vamsi replacing Brown Jnr down the hill. Mad-dog bowled a very good spell, despite nursing a particularly violent hangover from the previous evening’s wild night in, and Wayzer despite looking like a child’s kite in his oversized trousers, and moaning every over about the wind, bowled a good steady spell.

With Pinny having left the field briefly after suffering a minor mishap due to the windy conditions, the skipper came on up the hill, enabling Browndog and the Roach to utilise their pace down the hill. Tom filling his boots with some late overs wickets, while Pinner returned to replace the skipper from the Wind Tunnel End. Looking refreshed and a little lighter on his feet, Matey did struggle with his follow through a little, and did his best to get the ball sent to Stansted Airport.

After a pretty decent fielding and bowling display, Takeley had restricted their hosts to 245-7 which was just about par on a decent track. They then set about tea, with much to discuss, particularly a lengthy quizzing of the Director of Cricket, to see if we could really get to the bottom of his political leanings.

Having heard enough of the Conno’s non-PC tirades, Thake and Sammons opened the batting in partnership for the 1,000th time in their careers – a club record. And rolled back the years, dealing with Griggs in their traditional fashion of patting it back to him with a ‘good ball’ nod. Eager to discover whether anyone else had called out Conno’s controversial life views, Thakester tried to get on with it, and saw his bails dislodged for a well made 6. This brought Team Match Day Director’s son Sean to the crease, and he and Sammy looked to build a partnership that would get Takeley back in contention. A task they carried out with a great deal of success, Sean finding gaps all around and hitting some sumptuous on-drives, and Sammy responding in the only way he can to an 8-1 field, containing 3 slips, 2 gullies and a backward point, by stepping to leg and guiding the ball accurately through the vacant 4th slip area. Having past 50, and changing his bat to the 50th Warsop of his career – a Warsop record, Sammy began to unleash and brought out every shot in his repertoire, reaching an excellent ton, an innings littered with a mixture of square cuts and cuts behind square.

A tired shot saw Sammy’s demise but Tom replacing him would hopefully increase the scoring rate further. Having accumulated a rapid near chanceless 30, that included being dropped 3 times in 4 balls – a league record, Teebs attempted one big hit too many, discovering that attempting to clear the longest straight boundary in the league, into a hurricane is no easy feat. With Lemo’s intelligent batting though, Takeley looked well placed to finish the job with 30 needed off the final 5, but losing Vamsi and Paaaaaatttttttttttttttt saw things going slightly wrong.

With 8 needed off the final over, a couple of hits would do it. Lemo attempted an ambitious flick down to the vacant fine leg area but succeeded only in misleading the keeper enough to earn 4 well-made byes. But a run out, a diving catch to dismiss housewives’ favourite Conno, all left the swish-meister himself Timmy Way to attempt the 3 runs needed for victory and the opportunity to secure himself legendary status and be carried off shoulder high by his jubilant team mates. It was not to be however, and despite his best efforts Tim could only find extra cover and a scampered single.

So glorious defeat and an end to the unbeaten record. Positive thoughts towards a return to winning ways next week at Hatfield Heath with the return of the proper skipper.
