Match report
Two’s Fall Just Short in Nail-Biter Against Sawbridgeworth
After last week’s loss, the Two’s were hoping to bounce back — but found themselves on the wrong end of another tight game. Winning the toss for the third consecutive week, skipper Gus Sammons opted to learn from past lessons and bowled first to make the most of the team’s strengths.
On a wicket offering plenty of bounce from a back-of-a-length, the skipper looked to extract everything his 6’4” frame could offer — and did so, claiming an early scalp. At the other end, Charlie Mugele spent a few overs undecided about which side of the wicket to bowl from, until some “constructive feedback” from his dad in the crowd persuaded him to switch back over. The change worked immediately: he delivered an outswinger’s dream — pitching middle-leg and clipping top of off. This was particularly sweet for Charlie, who’s regularly reminded by mid-off and mid-on how to bowl away swing.
As ever, Takeley’s first-change bowlers proved a real asset. Matt Furrer and Adam “Harrison” Henderson bowled with control and intent. Harrison held a tight, attacking line, while Matt brought raw pace. Once he sorted out his radar — following one down leg and one wide outside off — he was ruthless, finishing with brilliant figures of 4-25.
At drinks, Takeley were on top and looking to wrap things up for around 130. Unfortunately, a few wayward overs and four dropped catches allowed Sawbridgeworth to dig in and fight back to a total of 177. Gus returned to mop up the tail, finishing with 2-37 (a touch expensive, by his own admission).
During the tea break, the live stream provided a chance to catch some highlights — along with a surprisingly strong show of support from our international viewership. It was brilliant to see so many tuning in... although it did raise the question: why weren’t some of them available to play? That said, we don’t condone some of the abuse directed at our players. The skipper is particularly disappointed to have been targeted for his leg-side filth — especially by a viewer from Flüh, Switzerland (yes, we tracked the IP address). We’re a supportive club, and that includes online.
Takeley’s reply started brightly, with Sid and JC putting on a solid 50 for the first wicket. Sid eventually holed out for 29, slog-sweeping to deep square — not long after a very questionable LBW shout was turned down. JC anchored the innings with a composed 56, surviving a couple of drops and batting with real maturity to give the Two’s a strong platform.
With vice-captain Pickers set and in, it looked like the game was there for the taking. But on a tricky wicket, acceleration wasn’t easy. Amaar, Caleb, and Matt fell in quick succession, and although Charlie landed a couple of blows, the final over required 25 — a step too far.
A fine effort, but not quite enough. We go again next week with a home fixture against Albury.
