Harlow Town III v Takeley Cricket Club Saturday Second XI on Sat 11 May 2024 at 13:00
Takeley Cricket Club Won by 25 runs
Match report
A first Report for the season as the 2's last game was won through the Stansted Hall 3s not being able to raise a side.
On a warm May afternoon in Harlow, the Skipper incorrectly called the toss and the 2s were stuck in to bat, on a soft but playable pitch. Sid and Pickers wandered out and looked to make a settled start, which after the first 6 overs seemed to be working, until the Skipper was incredibly bowled round his legs. Joe Benton followed shortly after missing a ball that started straight and finished on middle stump. Sid fell shortly after a well played 22, but left the 2s in trouble with 29-3.
Ben Thomas had a look for his first ball, and the following 3 balls hit 6, 6, 4, with some good counter punching, which prompted to the opposition to question if he was playing cricket or "baseball". Adam was looking solid defensively until hitting one to gully. Young Caleb, who had been displaying some disappointment that Takeley were not past 130 already, came to the crease. With Ben at the other end, the hutch was waiting to see some fireworks from these two batsmen to accompany last nights Aurora Borealis.
Sadly, the fireworks were more comparable to a sparkler in a bucket of water and both departed quickly after one another. Vishal’s stay was even briefer, after a blow to one's nether region, he was given out LBW first ball and, with the tail failing to wag, the 2's (and Vishal) limped to 71 all out.
With Tea not being ready, The 2's were back out straight away, and the reunited opening pair of Bob and H needing to get a good start to have a chance of some points. That happened with H's first ball, bowling the number 2 batsman, and a few overs later Harrison would have his second victim, bowled again, and with it a second bonus point secured at 7-2.
Harlow Town rallied to 28-2, with the number 4 Bat looking to hit every ball as hard as he could. After giving Gustavo some leg side tap, the Skipper and Vice Skipper made changes to the Field to stem the leg side runs and the Vice Captain promised not to bowl anything Short and outside off stump. Psyched out, the batsman foolishly fell for the subterfuge of Gus’s Slow Straight One (sponsored by T.A.G Aviation) and was given out LBW. If the Shout for the LBW wasn't enough to wake up the Harlow Town players then the following cheer from Gustavo certainly was as Batsman number 5 was promptly bowled next ball. Not only another bonus point secured but a possibility of a Takeley W was on the cards.
After good spells from H (2-13 ) and Gus (2-22), it was time for the greatest 9 balls bowled by a father and son partnership you are likely to ever see.
Veer Kapil, making his 2XI debut took a triple wicket maiden in his second over. Harlow Town Captain skied one to Ben at Mid off, then a good catch from Vishal off his son’s bowling two balls later. This was followed by bowling the number 8 batsman out for a golden duck and with a send off from Veer he was on a hatrick.
Vishal was to follow, and took two in two balls, meaning he was on a hatrick too. Harlow Town went from 36-4 to 36-9 in the blink of an eye. Neither Father or Son took their hatrick chances, 2 jugs avoided for Vishal! A big LBW shout from Vishal, which may have been missing leg stump by a foot, and Veer's attempt narrowly missing off stump.
Harlow dug in as best they could but there was no stopping Veer taking his 4th wicket and Takeley taking home an unfathomable 20 points. Veer proudly walked the team off finishing on 4-8 and Vishal with 3-2.
The Team entered the dressing room speechless, try to make sense of the somewhat senseless and due to mouths full of a hard earned tea. The 2's look to make back to back wins next weekend at Thorley.
