Takeley Cricket Club Saturday Second XI v Hockerill CC 2nd XI on Sat 03 May 2025 at 13:00
Takeley Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report After winning the Division 3 title last season, the Two’s kicked off their new campaign with a confident home victory against Hockerill 2’s. Winning the toss — and mindful of the number of bowling options available — the newly appointed skipper chose to bowl first.

Despite the very first ball of the season being a beamer, duly cracked to the boundary, the slip cordon feared they were in for a long, hot afternoon. But those worries were soon swept aside thanks to a superb opening spell of 2-11 from Charlie Mugele. Once Sammons found his rhythm, Hockerill’s batters struggled to build momentum, relying heavily on extras — with Matt Furrer a main offender, along with an unforgettable 10-ball over from Sam Kendrick which ended on a wicket.

Among the chaos, Luca Barnes produced a standout eight-over spell, full of control, guile, and sharp turn, finishing with figures of 3-25 — his best for Takeley to date. The tail offered little resistance, as the wizard-like Oswald weaved his magic with 2-1 in a single over, before Vishal wrapped things up, leaving the Two’s chasing a below-par 151.

During the break, the team refuelled with some quality refreshments — with the real highlight being a stuffed sausage baguette so good it was getting remarks from many players and spectators. Properly fed and fired up, Ozzy and Dom headed out to begin the chase, roared on by Dom’s enthusiastic young son. With Peter Francis opening the bowling for Hockerill, is was decided (by Dom) that Ozzy should take first strike.

Dom batted superbly for his 72, never giving Hockerill a sniff of a breakthrough. When one did come, it was through a wild swipe from the club secretary that saw him bowled. Soon after, a chaotic mix-up left latecomer Matt Fildes stranded mid-pitch — but in a moment that will haunt Hockerill’s dreams, the keeper somehow fluffed the simplest of run-out chances from barely a foot away. That miss proved costly, as Fildes made them pay with a rapid-fire innings, including a thunderous six launched onto the B1256. Takeley chased down the target in just 22.1 overs, securing a commanding first win of the season.

Next up, the Two’s head to High Easter to take on High Roding 3’s next week.
